◆ On Application of DHA Powder in Infant Milk Powder

DHA made of fish oil contains EPA. Does EPA have impacts on infants’ growth? There is an opinion that containing too high EPA content may restrict the composition of AA in bodies, impacting the growth of nerve system. Current there has been no evidence of research for this point. On the contrary, EPA is the natural components of human milk (highest standard for infant milk powder), and in the human milk, EPA holds 0.1%-0.2% of fatty acid (as per survey of the European human group, and it may be higher for the Chinese)
  • Intensified DHA and EPA infant milk powder has been popular in Europe for tens of years, without causing any harmful reaction. The infant’s growth, intelligent growth, and bleeding time appear to be normal.
  • Intensified DHA (containing EPA) infant milk powder is better than the contrast group (non-intensified DHA) in terms of vision and brain growth.
  • Even so, such international organizations as ISSFAL and FAO still restrict the addition of EPA in infant milk powder.
  • In the report for recommended input of fatty acid, ISSFAL, the international authentic research institution, (including FAO specialists), suggests that in the infant milk powder, DHA should be 0.35% of the total fatty acid and EPA should not exceed 0.1%.
